- Why
do we recommend early orthodontic treatment for your child?
- When treatment is started at an early age, more
conservative procedures are possible, allowing most children to benefit from
having their teeth straightened without the need for painful and traumatic
extractions
- Most people think that crowded teeth need to be
treated by taking out teeth
- But the crowding is generally caused by lack
of growth of the jaws and not the presence of too many teeth
- We try limiting extractions to cases where there is very severe crowding
- Using dental appliances at an early age can gently correct the shape of your child's jaws
- By creating space to allow your childs teeth to erupt into the correct positions and eliminate the need for those dreaded extractions
- This is mostly used in children but we can in
suitable cases also use it in teens and adults
- We like
to see your children as early as possible to assess their orthodontic
needs.
- We find that placing dental appliances early can allow us to
treat quite difficult cases with the minimum of fuss.
- Poor
growth and bad habits can cause a misalignment of the jaws - if this is
not corrected at an early stage it can lead to more complex dental treatments and extractions to correct later on.

Orthodontic Consultation is recommended at age 6 to observe how your child
is growing, so we can intercept with dental treatment as soon as is
necessary.
- A good reason for your child to have a dental consultation
would be if they have bad oral habits, such as breathing through their mouth, difficulty sleeping, immature swallowing (tongue thrust), thumb/finger sucking etc. These bad habits can damage the
shape of their mouths and cause them problems later.
